Setting up a women’s branch

An effective way to strengthen women’s participation in our party’s policy making is by establishing a local women’s branch within your Constituency Labour Party (CLP). The Secretary of the women’s branch automatically serves as the CLP’s women’s officer and takes a seat on the CLP’s Executive Committee.

Women’s branches are designed to increase women’s democratic engagement within the party, through activities such as running events, hosting speakers and organising campaigns. They also  support the development of women members and encourage them to stand for elected positions, such as becoming a councillor.

The first step, if possible, is to find at least one or two other women in your CLP to work with you on setting the women’s branch up. We can check if there are any LWD supporters in your CLP and where possible, we can connect you with women’s branch secretaries or women’s officers who can guide you through the process. If you encounter any opposition within your CLP to setting up a women’s branch (unfortunately this does happen) remember that establishing Women’s branches is official Labour Party policy. They are the recognised and legitimate means for organising women within the party.
