We are delighted that the two candidates we endorsed in the CLP section of nominations to the National Women’s Committee, Dr Louise Irvine and Dr Juemin Xu, received 29 and 28 nominations respectively from CLPs (see full nomination results here). They both therefore now go forward to the ballot on 7th October at the Labour National Women’s Conference in Liverpool. We urge all Women’s Conference delegates to read their statements below and vote for them on 7th October.
I’m an NHS campaigner and Chair of Save Lewisham Hospital Campaign. I’m from Scotland, studied in Aberdeen, and been a GP in Lewisham for 30+ years. Locally I’ve campaigned on migrant women’s access to NHS maternity care, against cuts to health visiting and child and adolescent mental health services, and shown support to striking NHS staff on the picket lines. I helped organise Keep Our NHS Public’s Peoples Covid Inquiry, ensuring a focus on the impact on women. I’m a Unite delegate to my CLP and active in my women’s branch. I spoke at National Labour Women’s Conference 2022 on ensuring good quality NHS care for women, and against the sexism and discrimination women have historically suffered in medicine and health care.
I’m standing for women’s committee to: 1. Ensure policies on women’s issues are central to Labour’s strategy and effectively address needs of the most disadvantaged women including childcare, benefits, healthcare. 2. Help build Labour women’s organisation, confidence and skills. 3. Ensure Labour fulfils its promise to defend the Equality Act’s single sex exceptions. 4. Encourage open and respectful debate on women’s rights.

As a first generation immigrant from China, I have been living here for 23 years. I’m a mother with a special needs child. I want to help make the country I have chosen to live in a better place. Being a Women’s Officer, I campaign for women to be active in the party. We achieved an all-fivewomen delegation to our recent regional conference. It’s not so long ago that women won legal equality. We cannot take our rights for granted.
Therefore, I’m standing to be a member of the NWC to: 1. Speak up for women’s sex-based rights and defend the rights to freedom of belief and expression. 2. Fight against misogyny, the root cause of violence against women and girls. 3. Help resolve any conflicts between the rights of women and rights of others. 4. Prioritise women’s needs and scrutinise Labour’s procedures and policies from women’s point of view. 5. Encourage women to be active in the party and stand for office. Promote virtual access, hybrid meetings and childcare reimbursement.
